Dr. Hembree is an Assistant Professor at Dickerson-Green Theological Seminary and teaches Pastoral Theology, Care, and Counseling. His scholarly research and interest examine the anthropological, psychological, and theological dimensions of traditional African religious thought and culture and the appropriateness of these resources for pastoral care and counseling with the African American community. Specifically, Dr. Hembree has developed a pastoral counseling method and practice for African American men, drawing upon the spiritual resources and teachings of the Yoruba people of Nigeria, West Africa. Dr. Hembree is the co-author of You are the Jewel in the Stone: A Narrative Resource for the Theological Exploration Vocation (2004). Dr. Hembree is a member of the American Academy of Religion, the Society for the Study of Black Religion, and the American Psychological Association and has served as Co-Chair of the Society for Pastoral Theology. In his leadership roles throughout his academic career, Dr. Hembree has also served on the following committees:
