Master of Arts in Religious Studies

The Master of Arts in Religious Studies prepares students to examine the relationship between religion, society, culture, and ethical leadership.

Through this program, students develop the knowledge and research skills needed for teaching, ministry, religious education, and community leadership. The degree may also support work related to women’s issues, social engagement, and ethical decision-making.

In addition, students complete advanced research within a chosen theological discipline. Therefore, the program provides a strong foundation for professional service or further graduate study.

Students may choose from the following concentrations:

• African American Religious Thought
• Women’s Studies in Spirituality
• Religion and Ethics

Admission Requirements

Applicants to the Master of Arts in Religious Studies program must submit the following materials:

1. A completed application form
2. A $45 nonrefundable application fee
3. Official transcripts from every college, university, graduate school, or seminary attended

The transcripts must confirm that the applicant earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Applicants should also have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5.

However, the admissions committee may consider applicants with a lower grade point average for provisional admission.

4. A personal statement

The personal statement should address the following questions:

• How would you describe your spiritual journey, and how has it shaped who you are today?

• What are your short-term and long-term career goals?

(Prospective students who do not submit a statement of purpose will not be considered for admission).

5. Three letters of recommendation

Transfer Student Requirements

Transfer Credit Guidelines

The Master of Arts program will review each transfer course before awarding credit.

To qualify for transfer credit, a course must meet the following requirements:

• The student must have earned a grade of B or higher.

• The course must come from an accredited institution or program.

• The course must apply to the Master of Arts degree requirements.

• The student may transfer no more than 18 credit hours.

• The student must have completed the course within ten years of enrollment.
